Rose Study Gallery
Williams Collge
Williamstown, MA

The existing 1805 Brick Beaux Arts building was enlarged in 1986 by Charles Moore and a number of the key building community members were still very active in the buildings daily operations. The importance for renovation was inadequate air quality control in the primary teaching space that doubled as print storage. Our solution was to convert an adjoining gallery to a dedicated study classroom and lecture space. The interior of the study gallery was refocused to concentrate on the exacting requirements of viewing various forms of art; sculpture; painting and print. The lighting design incorporated complete scheme scenarios for specific types of art study, including directional to diffuse light as well as differing light intensity and temperature quality to simulate both interior and exterior light conditions. The HVAC system was revamped to control temperature and humidity and to respond quickly to maintain proper levels upon the arrival of 25 late to class art students.
