Arlington Village Center
Arlington, VT

This project is 4.3 acres of mixed-use space designed for both its residents as well as the local community. Working closely with town leaders requests, this project provides new elderly housing, renewed life to historic structures, and mixed income housing in the heart of Arlington. Simultaneously, upgrades to the failing and undersized infrastructure were made, which impact both the village and the greater community.

Vermont’s "Smart Growth Initiative" was a core component, to create needed services and housing in previously developed areas, to limit sprawl, and reduce the impact on Vermont's farmlands. Preservation of the historic houses was also a core component to minimize disturbance of the streetscape and to gain project funding.

The new village apartments were set away from the street, nestled into the hillside and fenestrated to reflect smaller massed buildings nearby. Many commissions and groups put forth great effort in meeting the requirements and meticulous design for upgrades to the site. The village green creatively provides a shared common space for town-wide community interaction. Within the village green, parking is neatly integrated and new walks interconnect homes, surrounding streets, and town amenities such as the post office, train station, and grocery store.
