Our firm has completed a wide range of projects for the VVH, in conjunction with the Department of Buildings and General Services. These projects included window replacements, various site designs, a sunroom addition, and a programmatic study for the development of a Dementia Unit at the existing facility.
The Dementia Unit study examined the creation of a living environment different from that of a typical assisted living/nursing home facility; specifically addressing the needs of dementia patients. Understanding the needs of three distinct groups was key to the programming and preliminary design of this facility; the patient, the family, and the staff. Concepts of wandering, time and space confusion, diminished senses and cognitive responses established the starting point of our design, which encouraged controlled resident movement and incorporated the cutting edge ideas of patient care in this type of facility. The project is successful based on a number of issues neither out standing in their own right; the incorporation of interconnected pathways that allowed controlled patient movement, interaction with the natural environment, the incorporation of memory jogging devices and spaces like a kitchen, a workshop and a green house.
